With the wide application of infrared technology in the military, the optical instrument made of magnesium fluoride not only has good transmittance in the medium wave infrared band, but also has high mechanical strength, strong thermal shock resistance and chemical resistance, and can be used as infrared temperature detector, precision guided missile fairing and infrared laser window.
Since the 1960s, hot pressed magnesium fluoride has been used in missiles guided by MWIR and aircraft IR front windows, IR pods, photoelectric radars and other systems. Among them, there are more representative infrared missiles, such as the "rattlesnake" missile of the United States, the missile of Russia, the "northwest wind" missile of France and the "strange snake" missile of Israel. Magnesium fluoride can be used for coating optical lenses. The optical equipment is coated with a layer of magnesium fluoride film, which can reduce the reflection of incident light on the lens interface, reduce the halo, and improve the image quality.
